Next Phase of Multi-Million Dollar Village Expansion Continues For Winter Opening

Visitors to the Big Sky Mountain Village Plaza area will see a new building has taken shape between the Snowcrest and Huntley Lodge. Construction crews will continue with interior work through the summer with a goal of opening for the 2007-2008 winter season.

Big Sky Resort broke ground two summers ago on the first of several structures that will re-shape the core Mountain Village over the coming decade. Village Center One, which will enhance the current pedestrian plaza and expand the retail and dining options at Big Sky. This four-story building will offer innovative slopeside work/play entertainment suites.

Description

The Historic Crail Ranch, Big Sky's original homestead, is now open for visitors. The unique log structure preserves the story of the Frank Crail family and their life in the Big Sky community in the early 1900s.

Prior to coming to what is now Big Sky, Franklin Augustus, (Frank) Crail arrived in Virginia City in 1864. In 1902 he came to the Gallatin Canyon with his wife, Sally, and their three children. The family had a large hay cutting operation in the meadows of the Westfork drainage.

Eugene Crail, one of Frank's children served in the Army in the World War I where he learned carpentry. He later returned to the canyon and built the Crail House using hand chiseled logs. The home has been restored and is furnished with pieces typical to those used by the Crails in the late 1800's.

The Crail family moved onto this land with a homestead of 160 acres. The Historic Crail Ranch building is the home that they once occupied.

Directions

The Historic Crail Ranch is located in the Meadow Village area of Big Sky, off of Spotted Elk Road. Follow the Big Sky Spur Road (Highway 64) west off of Highway 191 for 2 miles until you reach Little Coyote Road. Turn right on Little Coyote and follow until Spotted Elk appears on the left. Historic Crail Ranch is on the left hand side of Spotted Elk.
